Kagematsu was a book illustrator active during the mid-1800s. One of his books, entitled Dokushū Mōhitsu Etehon (i.e., Practice Book of Brush Painting for Self Learning), focused on flowers and birds. The book’s sixteen pictures are shown in this gallery. Kagematsu’s picture designs were more complex than typically found in woodblock-printed, Japanese picture books published to provide models for aspiring artists to copy.
